Art of the Crusades Era European Art. The era of the Great Crusades encompass two periods in the art in Europe. It spans the end of the Romanesque style and the beginning of Gothic art, the former ending around the middle of the 12th century. This illumination from the Gospel Book of Abbot Wedricus, entitled St. John the Evangelist, shows. The Crusades failed permanently to restore Christian control of Jerusalem, but they did have many other effects. The Crusades strengthened the power and influence of the pope over the church in Europe. They seriously weakened the Byzantine Empire, which continued to lose territory to Islam until the city of Constantinople fell.

Justin Cartwright's best books on the Crusades Justin Cartwright, whose latest novel muses the figure of Richard I, chooses his favourite books about the Crusades. In addition, some crusades have been named, including the Albigensian Crusade, the Baltic (or Northern) Crusades, the People's Crusade, and the Reconquista. Crusader Territory Upon the success of the First Crusade, the Europeans set up a king of Jerusalem and established what is known as the Crusader : Melissa Snell.
